  4. The off season travel is a lifesaver for us! We went to Paris in March and it was magical! Especially since we dont have kids so we arn’t bound by school schedules. Research is such an important factor. People think im crazy but I would prefer to over research vs being unprepared. A very useful read and reminder!

  6. These are great tips! I usually travel on a budget and I definitely put most of these into practice. Unfortunately, as a social phobic person, I don’t really like traveling in groups or going on road trips with other people. But it’s still possible to travel on a budget as a solo traveler. 🙂

  7. Love these tips! We often travel during off-peak times. I like to do a lot of research before a trip and we always bring food too. I have a little obsession with welcome centers and always like to find them!

  8. Great tips! We base all our trips on being as flexible as possible. 1 day can make a huge difference in airfare! When we went to Hawaii years ago, it was cheaper to stay a few extra nights at the hotel than to fly home early!

  9. Without having a lot extra I am super excited for camping and backpacking this year. I got a new backpack last year, one that will last hopefully for years. Now that I have it, I will be backpacking as much as possible this summer

  11. Great suggestions! My kids sometimes aren’t huge fans of eating the food we bring (instead of eating out), but I stress to them that the vacation wouldn’t happen if I wasted money on eating out all the time (it rarely works, lol).

  12. These are really great tips! We love road trips, and usually end up bringing our own food (or grabbing stuff from a local grocery store). We have only been camping once, but may turn it into a yearly adventure.

  14. These are great tips for budget travel. Are there hostels in the USA? I can no longer tent camp. I tried last summer and got injured and messed a week of work.

    1. There are hostels in the United States….you can find them in the bigger cities but its worth checking any location and you might luck out!

  15. I have discovered as I age that I do not like being around a lot of people. I require tranquility. This makes me think of wooded tranquility!

  17. These are great tips! With four kids, it is always, always cheaper to drive than fly. But we’ve discovered that driving is an opportunity for fun all on its own. We try to take advantage of roadside attractions, like you mentioned, and aren’t opposed to veering off the path for something special. It makes every trip and adventure!

  18. Group trips are the best! We went to England – four of us, two rooms and/or bedrooms at AirBnB and had it under 1500 for ten days! We had a blast!

  19. Having a larger than average size family has added exponentially to our vacations and shorter trips, hell, even our regular daily lives, so it is great to have a lot of these tips presented to help with ideas we hadn’t thought of!

  20. Great tips! I do all of these. Plus when I can, I stay in an Airbnb or a short term apartment with a full kitchen and cook most of my meals.

  21. My husband and I love to travel. We have three girls so learning how to save money on travel is essential. One of our favorites is to pack picnic lunches—especially when we can eat them in the Italian countryside.

    1. Sounds lovely!! I like the convenience of packing your own food. Too many times restaurants all but disappear when I am ready to find one for a meal! LOL
