Simple DIY Dog Ice Cream Recipe
Get ready to spoil your dog this summer with these tasty homemade dog ice cream treats! Doggie ice cream is perfect if you need a little help keeping your pup cool and hydrated on hot sunny days. Frozen treats are just one of many types of food enrichment that can be used to help celebrate a special occasion, impress guests at a dog party, or just to make your dog happy. I love using this DIY dog ice cream recipe because it is so quick, easy, and affordable. The best part is that it is super easy to adjust so you can create a whole new flavor!
Doggie Ice Cream Ingredients
When you make homemade dog ice cream, you only need 3 ingredients! The first two ingredients (bananas and yogurt) will make the base. The yogurt should be dog-safe so you will want to use Greek, low-fat, or non-dairy yogurt. This is important because food with high-fat content is more likely to lead to upset stomachs and can cause serious issues that require vet care like pancreatitis. Don’t forget to double-check the ingredients to make sure it doesn’t have anything in it that is toxic to dogs like xylitol.
The third ingredient is up to you! This is the one that will control the flavor of doggie ice cream you make. You can use berries, pumpkin puree, or even peanut butter! It is important to note that depending on what flavor you choose, you may need to adjust the amount you put into the recipe. It can also affect the length of time it will take for your dog’s ice cream treats to freeze fully.
In addition to the ingredients, you will also need a blender (we have the Ninja Professional 1500 watts) and something to freeze the ice cream in. Feel free to use a bigger container, ice cube trays, silicone molds, Kongs, Toppl, or even lick mats. Like most homemade ice cream, I’ve found that taking individual scoops from a large container is never as easy as I think. Because of this, I highly recommend using smaller molds or ice cube trays so you don’t have to struggle to get an appropriate serving size for your pup.
3-Ingredient Dog Ice Cream Recipe
Ingredients for Doggie Ice Cream:
- 16 oz (2 cups) Low Fat yogurt (like Greek or non-dairy)
- 1-2 Bananas (peeled and diced). I typically use one banana for fruit and 2 bananas for stronger-flavored items like peanut butter.
- ¼ – 1 cup of your chosen flavor. If you want to use food like strawberries or pumpkin puree, use 1 cup. For flavors like peanut butter (which is higher in fat), use ¼ cup. You can adjust the amount depending on your and your dog’s personal preferences and dietary needs!
Be creative, mix and match berries, or sprinkle in additional dog-safe seasonings like cinnamon. Feel free to taste test and adjust the ingredients to get the flavor you want for your pups- remember all these ingredients are safe for both you and your dog.
Directions:
Simply blend all three ingredients together, pour into your desired mold, and freeze! If you are making these ice cream treats for a special occasion, you can always top it with a biscuit or crumble-up dog treats, or even bacon to use as sprinkles. Once frozen, you should use the ice cream within 2 months.
If you find that your pup loves homemade dog ice cream, try your hand at homemade dog popsicles! And don’t worry if you are short on time, you can always order dog ice cream online or in most pet and grocery stores.
Giving Your Dog Homemade Dog Ice Cream Treats
As with most food enrichment, you will want to keep an eye on your dog when you give them frozen treats to make sure they are consuming them safely. You will also want to limit the amount that you give to your dog, so they don’t get an upset stomach because of too many tasty treats. Lastly, don’t forget to adjust their daily diet as needed so they stay happy and healthy for years to come.
