How to Make Homemade Dog Sushi Treats

If you love something, it is only natural to want to share it with your closest friends and family members- including your dog! Did you know you can make healthy sushi for dogs? These tasty rolls are perfect for a ‘doggy-date’ night or just for fun! Making sushi isn’t as hard as you think, which means that this is an easy way to spoil your four-legged friend. The best part is that depending on the ingredients you choose, you can eat it too! Read on to learn how to make safe dog sushi treats for your pup that you can enjoy as well!

Can Dogs Eat Sushi?

Yes, you can give your dog sushi as long as you know exactly what is in it. It is very important to make sure that all the ingredients involved are safe to be eaten by dogs. Some typical foods found in sushi like avocado or raw fish can harm your pup and should be avoided. When you make your dog sushi, you have complete control over what will go in it. This is the best way to guarantee that your dog’s sushi treats will be safe for them to eat.

It may be tempting to let your dog eat as much sushi as they want because a lot of the ingredients have great health benefits but don’t do it! Too much of any type of food that they aren’t used to is tough on their stomachs. This can lead to diarrhea or pancreatitis, leading to costly vet visits.

Ingredients for Dog Sushi Treats:

You can create any type of sushi roll using any type of dog-safe food, including dog treats or peanut butter. However, if you are hoping to make more traditional sushi rolls that you can share with your pup, here are some ingredients you can use.

• Rice
• Cucumber
• Smoked salmon
• Nori Seaweed Wraps
• Bell Peppers
• Asparagus
• Mushrooms
• Bean Sprouts
• Carrots
• Spinach

How to DIY Sushi for Dogs:

We were surprised to find how easy it was to make sushi, especially dog sushi. Once you choose your ingredients, you just have to cook, cut, and prepare the ingredients and then roll them up! If you are more of a visual person, there are some great YouTube videos that explain these steps even more clearly.

1. Prepare rice (you will want to wash the rice, let it soak for about 15 minutes, and then cook it)
2. Cut and prepare the other ingredients for your sushi rolls.
3. Wrap the sushi rolling mat in plastic wrap
4. Place seaweed wrap on the rolling mat.
5. Spread rice on the seaweed wrap (Tip: leave room at the edge so it will stick together better)
6. Add your other ingredients.
7. Roll & Cut Your Sushi
8. Serve and enjoy!!!

Tips on Making Sushi for Dogs:

• Make sure you use ‘sushi’ rice or plain white rice. Sushi rice does work best but it does have vinegar, salt, and sugar in it. These ingredients can be bad for your pup in large amounts.
• Keep a bowl of water nearby to wet your knife and hands to keep rice from sticking when you are spreading it on the seaweed wrap
• Clearly mark dog-sushi ingredients and rolls if you are also making non-dog-friendly sushi. You will also want to be careful of cross-contamination.
• A normal-size piece of sushi could be a choking hazard for some dogs- especially if they are small. Cut their sushi into smaller pieces to avoid any incidents if needed. Remember it’s better to be safe than sorry!
• Wasabi is NOT good for dogs (due to the spiciness) so avoid using any ingredients that have this in it.
